Diwali, the Indian festival of light, will be celebrated the world over this coming Sunday 27th October.
This major festival is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains and signifies the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil. While each faith has its own reason to celebrate the festival, one of the most popular stories told is the legend of Lord Rama and his wife Sita returning to the kingdom of Ayodhya in northern India after defeating the demon king Ravanna in the 15th century BC.
Diwali also signifies the beginning of a new year as per the Hindu calendar, and families use this auspicious occasion to clean out their homes and decorate it with traditional diyas (earthern oil lanterns). The lighting of a diya is believed to bring good luck.
In India, children play with fireworks on the streets and friends and family exchange boxes of sweet treats. At Souq Extra, our colleagues who celebrate Diwali keep up with the traditions from back home. Deepak Prakash (Operations Manager at Souq Extra) recalls his favorite Diwali ‘mithai’ (sweet treats) which include Karanji, Shankarpale, halwa, ladoos and chivadi.
Souq Extra wishes everyone a very Happy Diwali. May the festive lights add brightness to your life.
