Saint Patrick’s Day falls on 17th March and celebrates the life and learnings of one of Ireland’s most respected religious personalities.
Given the Irish flavor in our celebrations this month, we wanted to explore the myth surrounding the 4-Leaf Clover.
Irish lore tells us that a 4-leaf clover will bring great fortune to its finder as it is a very rare breed among the commonly found 3-leaf variety.
The four leaves are said to signify faith, hope, love, and luck.
According to legend, Eve carried a four-leaf clover from the Garden of Eden.
The clovers also occupied a position in the cultural life of early people. White clover was held in high esteem by the early Celts of Wales as a charm against evil spirits.
Druids also held the 4-leaf clover in high esteem and considered them a sign of luck.
In 1620, Sir John Melton wrote: “If a man walking in the fields find any four-leaved grass, he shall in a small while after find some good thing. The mystique of the four-leaf clover continues till today, since finding a real four-leaf clover is still a rare occurrence and an omen of good luck.
According to Wikipedia, the occurrence of the 4-leaf variety is 1 in 5000.
Even today, several businesses and organizations use a four-leaf clover in their logos to signify Celtic origins and good luck.
