November 27, 2018
UAE Martyr’s Day (or Commemoration Day) falls on Friday 30th November. This significant date on the UAE calendar is in recognition of the bravery and sacrifices of Emirati martyrs who have given their life for the country in the arenas of civil, military and humanitarian service.
On August 19, 2015, it was announced that 30 November would be observed as Martyrs Day.
Perhaps you’re wondering why is it held on 30th November? It is on this day in the year 1971 that the very first Emirati soldier died in the line of duty. His name was Salem Suhail bin Khamis, and he fought bravely in the “battle of the Greater Tunb” against Iranian forces shortly before the UAE’s formation. Bin Khamis led a six-member police force on Greater Tunb, invaded by Iran on the eve of Federation. He refused to lower the flag of Ras Al Khaimah, and the invaders took his life for his defiance.
As a sign of respect to the bravery and dedication of UAE martyrs, Souq Extra will be observing a 1 minute silence across all its centers on Thursday 29th November at 11.30 am. We value their sacrifices, and honor their memory.
